#event The EU faces problems on many fronts, from the recent migration crisis to the spread of right-wing populism. How can Europe bolster its resilience, and what will happen if it does not? Ivan Krastev will attempt to make sense of three paradoxes. Why do Central European voters, some of the continent's most pro-European electorates, put into power anti-EU parties that openly loathe independent institutions? Why has the political mobilisation of Western Europe’s younger generations, seemingly much more liberal and friendly to the Union than older voters, not led to the emergence of a pan-European, pro-EU populist movement? And why are Europeans so resentful to Brussels’ elites, when they are the most meritocratic elites in Europe?

Ivan Krastev is Chairman of the Centre for Liberal Strategies in Sofia and Permanent Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences, Vienna and Richard von Weizsäcker Fellow (2017). He is a founding board member of the European Council on Foreign Relations, a member of the Board of Trustees of The International Crisis Group and a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times. His latest books include “After Europe” (UPenn Press, 2017) “Democracy Disrupted. The Politics of Global Protest” (UPenn Press, 2014), and “In Mistrust We Trust: Can Democracy Survive When We Don't Trust Our Leaders?” (TED Books, 2013).

Organised as part of the Institute's cooperation programme with the Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen, funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation (SERI).
